In loving memory of
Dr. Ernest Walter Dahl passed away April 24, 2019 at the age of 85 from cancer. He is survived by his wife, Kathy, his three children, David, Andria (Bruce) and Karen (Maarten), three grandchildren, and a large extended family including Kathy's daughters, son-in-law, and twin granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his son, Remington; his brother, Herbert; and his parents, Gerda and Eric Dahl.
Born in Berlin, Germany, as a child Ernie and his family fled from the Nazi regime to England, where they narrowly escaped being sunk by Nazi bombers, and later experienced severe bombings in London before finally making their way to New York.
Ernie graduated from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor's degree in Economics, and after working in the retail trade in Connecticut and Illinois, he went to Denver to earn a PhD from the University of Denver, and then received his Counseling Psychologist license in California.
He worked at American River College for thirty years, teaching psychology and serving as a student counselor. He was the first full-time Dean of Counseling at American River, and he served as Chief Negotiator, representing faculty at the three community college campuses.
Ernie served as a Member of the Board of Directors for the Mental Health Association of Sacramento, and the United Nations Association of U.S.A. He also volunteered at the Davis Mediation Center and the Child Sexual Abuse Treatment Center. Recognition he received for his volunteer work included an Exceptional Service award from the School Counselors Association for activities related to State legislation.
After retirement, Ernie loved to read, but generally he preferred outdoor activities, including hiking, tennis and pickle ball. He traveled widely to hike, and became a Sierra Club member and hiking leader. In his last weeks, he recalled some of his favorite trails in Nepal, the Czech Republic, France, Switzerland, Italy, Israel, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Botswana.
